Maria Island Wildlife Sanctuary
玛丽亚岛野生动物之旅
from AUD $210
THE EXPERIENCE
Maria Island has no cars, no shops, and no permanent residents — only a single ranger station, the ruins of a 19th-century convict probation station, and an extraordinary density of native wildlife. Wombats graze on the lawns of the old buildings as if they own them. The Painted Cliffs paint themselves a different colour every hour as the sun moves. This is a full day of walking — bring sturdy shoes and a packed sense of curiosity.

THE JOURNEY
Detailed Itinerary
Triabunna Pier
Triabunna 码头
A 90-minute coastal drive from Hobart brings you to the small fishing town of Triabunna, where the Maria Island ferry departs. Coffee and last-chance supplies available before boarding.
Ferry Crossing
乘船登岛
A 30-minute crossing across Mercury Passage. Dolphins are common companions; on lucky days, sea eagles ride the thermals overhead.
Darlington Probation Station
达令顿监狱遗址
A UNESCO-listed convict heritage site, remarkably intact since the 1820s. The Commissariat Store, Penitentiary, and Old Coffee Palace anchor the day's walking route.
Fossil Cliffs
化石悬崖
A short walk from Darlington to a sea cliff packed with marine fossils 290 million years old. You can see scallop shells and ancient sea-floor textures embedded in the rock at eye level.
Painted Cliffs
彩绘悬崖
Sandstone cliffs streaked with iron oxide that has bled through the rock over millennia, painting them in ochre, amber, and rose. Best photographed in the soft light of late afternoon.
Wombat Spotting
野生袋熊探寻
Maria's wombats are habituated to people and graze openly throughout the day — but never approach or feed them. Ryan will help you find the best vantage points and the calmest individuals.
